The Community
Heavy metal music is a very distinct community. It has characteristic that separate it from the rest of the music world. By that I mean that you can definitely tell that this community is heavy metal. You can see a “metal head” in a crowd of people. They stick out because of their clothes. But beyond that fact they are a community because of the fact that they have their own way of doing things, like having fun. Members of this community like getting pushed around in a mosh pit. That is fun only to people of this community. Only they truly understand what it means to head bang or air guitar because it is their community. No one else shoots up devil horn when they hear something that they like. This community has its own history in the media. There are songs that belong to this community. That is a big deal given the fact that some communities don’t even have music to call their own. Only they truly understand the hard work and dedication of a screamer. It is not easy to scream at the top of your lungs while scratching and potentially damaging your throat and voice, and sing perfectly like none of that just happened to you. It is next to impossible. But the members of the heavy metal community can do it. This community is also special in the fact that within the community there are more communities. There are members who are a part of the separate branches of heavy metal. I myself actually like power metal because it is not so dark and depressing like the others. But there can be a member of the heavy metal that is a member of the death metal community but not the power metal community. But everyone in this community can relate to each other. They understand each other’s likes and differences about each type of heavy metal. That’s part of what makes them a community.
