Gestures
There are many different gestures in this community. The most famous by musicians it the head bang that they do. You always see them rocking it out while banging their head with their long hair wildly doing as followed. The most famous gesture in the entire community is the horns that you make with your hands. You make a fist except for the index finger and pinky that stick straight up into the air. You hold this sign high to support your band, your fans, or anyone in the community. This gesture is called the devil horns.
The next gesture is the air guitar. The air guitar is what you do while you listen to your favorite band or CD. You simulate playing an actual guitar in the air. It is that simple. The next gesture is well known as well. The crowd surf is from the community of heavy metal. Who knew? Heavy metal has a lot of well-known gestures to people outside of its community. But there are some that are not so well-known, like the infamous mosh pit.
The mosh pit is one of the most dangerous gestures in the heavy metal community. A mosh pit is when a crowd of people push and shove in messy brawl during a song. Sometimes these things can get out of hand. People can get seriously injured in a mosh pit, and even die. I have been in a mosh pit myself once, and I don’t find it very amusing. A girl punched me in the face during the mosh pit and knocked me flat on my back. I interviewed my friend Chris Meadows who is a member of this community. I asked him why he gets into mosh pits. “Because of the rush I get from going in one,” says Chris, “the pit is one of the best parts of the concert.” (Meadows) I had to disagree with him. I remember what Chris looked like after coming back from a mosh pit. He and a friend had to go to the hospital after being trampled by the people in the pits. Chris only had a cut on his eyebrow but his friend wasn’t so lucky. He had broken his arm and had to go to the ER. This is not my type of fun.
